Rev. Carter L. Cortelyou > 2026 Michigan Annual Conference
Reflecting on my years within the Michigan Conference (1990-2026), I borrow, without reservation, the language of many before me to thank a God and a beloved community that has given me so much.
My heart is filled with gratitude for the opportunities I was given to be of use. There is a unique joy in those moments where I was invited to step into my purpose, whether in liturgy, leadership, or pastoral care. I am thankful for the congregations and the Conference for providing the soil where my ministry could take root. I am indebted to those who provided grace as I learned while I led, particularly Rev. Doug Paterson and Rev. Steve Buck. I have found fulfillment in using my heart, soul, and mind to build up the Body of Christ.
I am particularly shaped by my journey with OurPath (formerly the Straight Spouse Network). This organization sustained me through the end of my first marriage and allowed me to support others walking the complex path of a straight or cisgender spouse of an LGBTQ+ person. Serving as Board President for six years called me to engage in the slow, steady work that leads to culture change.
I am grateful for our denomination’s move toward full acceptance of the ministry and love of LGBTQ+ people, including my first wife, Rev. Peggy Garrigues-Cortelyou. I hope we continue to advocate for biblical social justice and to encourage all people to look to their mental health.
I close with thanks and deep joy for the love of my wife, Andrea, and my children, Jeremiah Garrigues-Cortelyou and Izzy Phoenix. It has been the honor of my life to serve among you.
